Shrek The Third Review
Written by. Cameron Hallinan
It has been six years since the last time I saw Shrek The Third (which was when I first saw it in the theater) and I recall having a rather muted reaction to it. Having really liked the first two films, I was entertained by this follow up but, along with the rest of the general public, found myself pretty underwhelmed overall. The consensus seems to consider this as the weakest of the Shrek series and honestly I can't disagree. The story wasn’t especially strong, the majority of the jokes missed the mark, and the formula was beginning to wear thin. After revisiting it for the first time since, the sentiment remains unchanged. While the interplay between Shrek, Donkey, and Puss in Boots is always entertaining, the storyline involving Fiona and the princesses is not very enthralling. Eric Idle as the wizard Merlin is a pretty enjoyable side character and the finale is a decent payoff. Honestly, I don’t have a whole lot to say about this one. This movie just feels so bland and forgettable compared to the humor and charm of its predecessors. It isn’t totally without merit but I simply feel if more humor and character were incorporated, this movie would have been much more worthwhile. If you are a die-hard Shrek fan and haven’t seen it already, I suppose you could check out but otherwise, this is a decent film to skip.
